At the Fu Yen Tong and Other Stories is a book about people living in New York City. The characters that inhabit the pages of these cityscapes are troubled in ways that people are everywhere: by memories, guilt, self-doubts, and uncertainty as to the reliability of the others who inhabit their world or the reliability of that world in general. The characters At the Fu Yen Tong are burdened, yet each seeks his or her redemption by means of various faiths, be they marital, cultural, spiritual, or, when all else fails, personal. In the end, each character finds something approaching redemption through self-effacement, by the spring-like quickening of their compassionate heart.
