October, 1962: A lone man in a rubber raft, beaten beyond recognition, floats helplessly in the middle of an endless sea. The raft is full of bloody water; the sun is beating upon his red and peeling skin. His bones are broken; he hopes death will come soon.Present Day: In the early hours of a late spring morning, a container ship is sabotaged and sunk in Seattle's Elliot Bay, close to an area known as Luna Park. 48 hours earlier, a local tugboat pilot had washed up dead on Alki Beach not far away. A beautiful Seattle police detective, a lawyer from St. Paul, Minnesota, and an ex-Marine from Round Rock, Texas, will ultimately team up with one of the saboteurs to figure out what all of these events have in common, and why an old man will stop at nothing to find what he is looking for. The Cluster brings the reader from the past into the present and back again to unravel this decades-old mystery.
