Helen Dice tackled life in Colorado's Brush Creek Valley near Eagle as a young mother and rancher's wife with gusto. Ranching was grueling work - for rancher and spouse - but with determination and compassion, she and her beloved husband, Fred, raised their family and learned many of ranching's difficult lessons, becoming part of the Brush Creek community as well. The land made the difficulties bearable: Helen had a special affinity for the mountains, creeks, skies, and fields. The glow of the setting sun, the sounds of yipping coyotes, a bird on the wing, and other of nature's offerings soothed Helen. Her descriptions of the mellowing influence of nature and the outdoors are instructive and satisfying.
