During the 19th century the Royal Navy underwent many changes- the most important of which were the substitution of steam for sail and the improving of the lot of the sailor himself. The author, a retired lieutenant commander, has recaptured the flavour of life on the lower deck in the 19th century, and traces the rise in the sailor's status.
