German artist Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943) created balanced, interdisciplinary roles for himself all throughout his life and was the pioneer of performance art. In order to orchestrate his creations successfully, he developed a theory founded on his art, according to which the human figure is presented in all spatial dimensions: "Man is the measure of all things." Inspired by the principal art movements of his time and in particular by Bauhaus, he made of his life a work of art: his Triadisches Ballett (Triadic Ballet), an avant-garde performance which presented a perfect union of body and space. Renowned painter, choreographer of genius, and prominent theoretician, Schlemmer was perhaps the best all-round artist of his generation.
