Traces the evolution of Christian theology toward Jews and Judaism from the Early Church to the 20th century, with emphasis on the anti-Jewish writings of Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus, and Martin Luther. Claims that the Holocaust is one of the consequences of these anti-Jewish beliefs. Pt. 2 (pp. 103-160), "Toward a New Christian Theology of Judaism", focuses on the positive changes which have occurred in the Catholic and Protestant attitude toward Judaism, especially under the impact of the Holocaust. The appendices (pp. 163-282) contain the original text and English translation of Luther's "Vom Schem Hamphoras und vom Geschlecht Christi" (1543), the Pastoral Letter on the 25th anniversary of the "Nostra Aetate" declaration (1991), and the Resolution "To Clarify Position on Anti-Semitism" of the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church (1983).
