Revised December 2024. Gunns are the original, non-related inhabitants of northern, mainland Scotland. They have no Orkney Islands origin. Gunns are not a traditional Clan as they had no founding father. The first Gunn known to history was Coroner Gunn of Caithness who died around 1450. In 1803 the Court of Session - the supreme court of Scotland - established a Clan Gunn Chief which obviously meant that Gunns were a Clan from then on. Coroner Gunn's eldest son started the MacHamish Gunns of Killernan / Clan Gunn Chief line - Gunn descendants from that line exist all around the world. Significant detail on this ongoing traditional Clan Gunn Chief line is included in the text. The traditional Clan Gunn Chief line is not extinct as some believe and which error was the basis of the invention of a new Clan Gunn Chief line in 2015.
