Refutes Daniel J. Goldhagen's allegation in "A Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and its Unfulfilled Duty of Repair" (2002), as well as the allegations of Rolf Hochhuth, John Cornwell, and others, that Pius XII collaborated with the Nazis by maintaining silence about the Holocaust, when a strong public protest might have saved many Jewish lives. Accuses Goldhagen of selectivity, distortion, and outright falsification of the facts, of poor scholarship, and of failure to understand the situation which made such protest impossible. Contends that many in the Church did save Jews, under instructions from the Pope, and that the Church has since done much to correct former injustice to the Jews and to express contrition.
