Ginny Lawrence's small town decides to help England prepare for World War II by accepting city evacuees into their country homes - and the young girl's life will forever be affected by two of the newcomers. Alistair, a boy slightly older than Ginny, comes to live with the Lawrence family. He is quiet, pleasant, and shows Ginny the respect she is often denied as the youngest of three children. Melissa, on the other hand, keeps to herself and initially spurns Ginny's advances of friendship. When her singing talent is discovered, Melissa becomes the talk of the town. After the war, however, Melissa leaves without a glance back while Alistair exits amidst tears and promises to come back after medical school. The excitement of everyday life departs with them and Ginny tries unsuccessfully to settle into a quiet routine - until Alistair's return sets in motion a chain of events that will ultimately force Ginny to face truth about her childhood playmates...
