An exchange of letters on history and politics between Broch, a Jewish writer, and von Zühlsdorff, a founder of the American Guild for German Cultural Freedom - both of them refugees from Nazi Germany who settled in America. Letters 1-7 (pp. 21-41), written between July-September 1945, deal with the question of the Jews' return to Germany. Broch believed that Jews should not return because of the persistence of antisemitism, while Zühlsdorff argued that not all Germans were guilty for the Holocaust and that there was resistance to persecution of the Jews during the war - an argument vehemently denied by Broch, who insisted on the Germans' guilt even if it was only due to indifference.
