Franklin Strain's wife, Susan Catherine Ratts (Kate) descended, in part, from the Stout line. Born in Nottinghamshire, England, Richard Stout was the son of John Stout & Elizabeth Bee who had married 13 Nov. 1609. After a disagreement with his father, Richard signed on with an English ship & 7 years later remained at New Amsterdam after the ship had landed there. Later, a Dutch ship was stranded at a place called Sandy Hook & the passengers made it ashore, but an injured man & his wife were left behind due to the passenger's fear of the Indians. The Indians discovered the couple, killed the man & left the wife for dead. After being cared for by an old Indian the wife was taken to New Amsterdam & set free. Penelope Van Princes, as the poor wife was called, was born in Holland ca. 1620 or 1622. She remarried when about 22 years of age to a much older afore mentioned Richard Stout. To make a long story short, 3 generations later, a Stout married a Smith who married a Merrill who married a Yarborough who married a Ratts.
