Preview available
This publication is a detailed account of the State of California's probation subsidy program, a relatively new and innovative approach to juvenile and adult corrections. Simply defined, probation subsidy encourages county probation departments to reduce their rate of committments to State correctional agencies. In return, the county receives a financial reward that is commensurate with the degree of reduction. The Youth Development and Delinquency Prevention Administration endorses the use of probation subsidy as a viable way for states to aid those offenders entrusted to their care. The author of this publication is Robert L. Smith, Chief of the Correctional Planning and Development Department of the California Youth Authority, Sacramento.
