Traces the history of the Jews in continental southern Italy, describing the organization of the Jewish communities, professions, and Christian-Jewish relations throughout the ages. Relates the use of violence during forced conversions in early Christianity (e.g. in 418), and again under Angevin rule, and the introduction of the yellow badge in 1307. Examines the issues of usury, taxation, and the legal status of the Jews during the Aragonese period, the violence of the French conquest (1495), the persecution of the "neophytes" accused by the Inquisition of Judaizing, and the repeated expulsions by the Spanish rulers in 1510, 1544, and 1746.
