The Lives of William Hartnell

William Edward Petty Hartnell (1798-1854) was born at Backbarrow, Lancashire, England. At various times in his life he was known as a scholar, trader, rancher, teacher, politician, peacemaker and diplomat in England, Germany, Chile, Peru, Russia's Pacific empire, the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), and California. He died at Monterey, California.
