Fisheries and Oceans Research Centres

These studies of technology transfer provide a concrete supplement to the companion report, "Fisheries and Oceans Research Centres: Economic and Technological Benefits". They are a small sample of the many specific instances where departmental activities have encouraged technology adoption by the private sector. Research centres provide incubation for technology. Highly skilled labour clusters at that location. Risk capital may be more accessible since local financial institutions begin to appreciate the S&T milieu and become more receptive to capital financing proposals. Ideas are exchanged and technology transferred. New firms are born to exploit the spinoffs, and many of these firms are supported during critical periods by contracts, expertise, and access to centre facilities.
