Parenting Skills

This publication provides parenting information concerning infants, toddlers, and children in the preschool, elementary school, early adolescence, and high school years. The section on infants includes material on child care, safety, and the process of learning language. Toddlers are discussed in terms of discipline, rewards, reading aloud, and temper tantrums. The preschool years are discussed in relation to the process of learning to communicate, the development of responsibility, and play. Guidelines for choosing toys and a preschool are offered. Discussion of the elementary school years concerns success in school, parent involvement in school, the process of building confidence, and the development of responsibility. The section on early adolescence covers teenagers' ways of making choices. High school years are discussed in terms of the ways teenagers establish independence, prepare for an occupation, establish values, develop relationships with the opposite sex, and deal with peer pressure. Guidelines for determining whether one's child is abusing drugs or alcohol, and over 20 resources for additional parenting information are provided. (RH)
