A popular booklet based on scholarly studies. Ch. 3 (p. 33-53), "The Expulsion of the Jews, " states that the late Middle Ages saw the spread of anti-Jewish feeling, reflecting economic competition and scapegoating based on anti-Jewish stereotypes. The resulting pogroms led to forced conversions; but the Conversos, too, were discriminated against, and their social success led to popular envy. The Inquisition was reestablished in 1480. After local expulsions, the Catholic Monarchs set a precedent for the Peninsula with the expulsion of Jews from their kingdom, followed by forced conversions in other locations.
