Pp. 8-16 present a brief historical sketch of Jewish history in the Subcarpathian region, which belonged to Hungary until the end of World War I and Czechoslovakia between the two World Wars; today, most of it is in Ukraine, with some parts in Hungary and Romania. Pp. i-xlvi [16-46] contain photographs of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries extant today. Pp. 69-143 consist of interviews with seven Jews from the region, with emphasis on their experiences during the Holocaust - the deportation (in 1944), the camps, and liberation. This region was occupied by Hungary in 1938, and the Jews shared the same fate as the rest of Hungary's Jews.
