These papers were first presented at a symposium held at the National Gallery of Ireland in April 1999 to celebrate the bicentenary of the death of the patron of the arts (it was accompanied as well by an exhibition of Charlemont's works). The papers, written by art historians, curators, and graduate students (the editor is an art historian at University College in Dublin), are devoted to various topics, including Charlemont's political career, a lost portrait of him by Sir Joshua Reynolds, his correspondence with Edward Murphy, his travels and illness in Rome, his relationship with William Hogarth, his collections of painting and ceramics, and the sculpture of Simon Vierpyl.
