Cap McKenna has built himself a respectable new life in the foothills of the Rockies with the help of J. Stuart Reynolds. One day McKenna comes upon a mixed-breed infant, and takes the baby with him. A Cheyenne woman, alone and terrified, comes to claim the baby. Cap helps locate the father, a black enlisted man. When the man deserts to be with his wife and child, the blame is put on Cap. Soon afterwards, now-deceased J. Stuart Reynolds's two teenage children appear at Cap's homestead station just ahead of their pursuers. What's happening to Cap McKenna's respectable and well-ordered new life?
