"The primary goal of this book is to be useful to diagnostic surgical pathologists. In fact, that is pretty much the only goal. As such, it is focused on diagnostic histopathology, discussing and illustrating disease patterns and their differentials. As part of this, key aspects of disease biology, clinical findings, laboratory findings, and molecular findings are woven into this book, but only to the extent that they affect how surgical pathologists make a diagnosis and report their findings to the clinical team. The chapters incorporate the extensive personal experience of the authors as well as the literature. The literature on the medical disease of the liver is vast, complicated, ever-growing, and sometimes contradictory. This book provides selected references to support key diagnostic points, but could not reference all relevant or valuable literature, and we acknowledge that many great papers could not be referenced for the sake of space. Each section discusses the use of clinically relevant immunohistochemical stains, focusing on how their use improves the sensitivity and specificity of diagnoses. In addition, sections provide differential diagnoses for each disease pattern. Here, again, the focus is on what is practical, discussing the entities that are most likely to be encountered in actual practice, focusing on actual diagnostic pitfalls, attempting to balance the need to be comprehensive while avoiding a laundry-list approach of potential associations. As if true for the entire series, this AFIP fascicle is extensively illustrated, and the images have been chosen with care for their educational and aesthetic value."--
