This book contains a wide selection of materials not available anywhere else. The selections reflect the reevaluation of the neoclassical and romantic periods that has occurred over the last twenty years, and presents a more accurate view of these periods than any other anthology. A general introduction explaining major political, social, and literary developments precedes each main division, providing readers with a historical context; the work of each author is preceded by a brief description of his or her life and work. Notes appear throughout to clarify difficult or obscure terms, and historical and geographical references.
