Management of wildlife in Canada is derived from the Roman principle of 'res nullius'. Wildlife has no owner until captured or killed, and is managed by the Crown (state) on behalf of all citizens. In Canada's northern territories, the territorial governments are responsible for management of wildlife, but the Federal Government owns much of the land, and is therefore responsible for habitat management. These wildlife resources have sustained Aboriginal societies for thousands of years and continue to play an important role in the economic, social and cultural life of Canada's northern commuities.
