The Alleghany Artillery, also known as the Alleghany Rough Artillery, enlisted in 1861 as Captain Joseph Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. It was also known as Company A, or Alleghany Light Infantry, of the 27th Regiment of the Virginia Infantry. In 1863 it became Captain John C. Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. The company served in R. Snowden Andrews', and later in Carter M. Braxton's, battalions of artillery.
