"The book and exhibition show works from the first two decades of the 20th century from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Bonn in dialogue with contemporary artistic positions. What the works from both eras have in common is that they were created in a time of great social and political crises and their reflection. Back then, the change in life through the industrial revolution; today, the transformation of our social coexistence through climate change, wars and the political strengthening of right-wing ideologies. Art is understood here as a means of questioning the world, providing new food for thought and thus also acting socially. The title, 'Twilight of Humanity', was based on the eponymous collection of poems by Kurt Pinthus from 1919, which summarizes the expressionist poetry of the still young century in four chapters: "Fall and Scream", "Love for Man", "Awakening of the Heart", "Call and Indignation". The main essay on the book was written by Florian Illies, who wrote the afterword for the new edition of Menschheitsdämmerung in 2019 - to mark the centenary of the most successful poetry anthology in German literary history.
