Archaic Maiolica is the term generally given to the medieval tin-glazed porducts of north and central Italy and specifically to the known industry at Orvieto. The pottery type spread all over Europe and also ended up in some strange contexts, as illustrations of pots embedded in Pisan churches prove. This detailed catalogue of finds in Pisa discusses the motifs found on the pottery in detail and also examines its use through a detailed analysis of the contexts in which it has been found.
