This book contains a collection of four papers on family policy, plus a critique of the papers from an economist's perspective. The first two papers examine the economic effects of single parenthood and divorce on those who experience them, considering such matters as the prevalence of single motherhood, the degree of reliance on welfare, social assistance policy options, long-term impacts of social assistance, and child support after divorce. The second two papers examine whether and how the financial support governments deliver to families should be changed. One paper compares transfers and tax relief for children in Canada and other countries and makes recommendations regarding universal family allowances; the other points out the difficulties with such a strategy and proposes a national child benefit program. Relevant statistical information is included.
